IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME

The Middle School in the secondary school implements and delivers the International Baccalaureate: Middle Years Programme (MYP), which is a course of study that is designed to meet the educational requirements of students between the ages of 11 and 16. The MYP has a holistic approach to teaching and learning that fosters the development of students as critical thinkers, effective communicators as language learners and life long learners who become aware of the differences between people, cultures and they show respect and tolerance to others. All disciplines in the MYP are taught within a global context and are assessed rigorously based on subject specific objectives and criteria.

The MYP prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme. In the MYP, students at QAK receive instruction in 8 subject groups; Language Acquisition (English or Arabic) , Language and Literature (English and/or Arabic), Individuals and Societies (Integrated Humanities, Sciences (Integrated Sciences and Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Mathematics (Mathematics or Extended Math in Grades 9-10) Arts (Visual art, and Performing Arts Drama) Physical and Health Education, and Design (product Design and Digital Design. The full program lasts 5 years. In Grade 10 students are entered for IB MYP Certification and sit a combination of eAssessment on onscreen examinations and complete ePortfolios in a range of subjects. A core part of IB MYP is service as action and community service. The community and service area requires students to study and perform community studies and service throughout the program. All students in Grade 10 complete their Personal Project which is a mandatory requirement in the MYP, culminating 5 years of experiences of inquiry learning and the development of approaches to learning skills.
