Qatar Academy Al Khor was authorized for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in January 2014 to become on of the IB World Schools. These are schools that share a common philosophy-a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that QAK believes is important for our students.

The Middle Years Programme is academically challenging and rigorous. It is designed for the 11-16 age-range covering Grades 6-10. In 2015, after Grade 10, the IB Diploma Programme will follow for which the school is now pursuing authorization.

In order to adhere to its mission statement, QAK is developing its own curriculum that aims at teaching the best international and local standards. We aim to develop in our students a sense of responsible citizenship and become critical thinkers. Special attention is given to the Arabic language where the school selected the Arabic language and Qatar History to meet the standards approved by the Supreme Education Council in Qatar. For Arabic and all other subjects we will be aligning the curriculum in such a way that it fits both the National, and the objectives and requirements of the IBO.


In the Middle School subjects are taught using the IBMYP Programme. It is a student-centred program that aims at developing life-long learners. Students at the Middle School will study courses from eight equally important subject groups: Language A (Arabic), Language B (English), Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, Technology (Information and Design), the Arts (Visual Art and Drama) and Physical Education. The MYP does not only focus on the academic progress of the student. The IBO puts an emphasis on holistic learning and international mindedness, as well as action through service. We want students to recognize the connections between the subjects and real life situations, become aware/ understand cultural differences and global engagement, and enable them to communicate their knowledge beyond subject boundaries.

The Areas of Interaction

The curriculum context or focus in the different subjects is provided through five areas of interaction, which focus on their learning.

Approaches to Learning (ATL): is about “Learning how to Learn”, become increasingly responsible for their learning and think critically. ATL includes seven different skills that will help them to develop insight in different learning styles.

Community and Service (C&S): All students in MYP are required to become involved in their communities in such a way that both benefit. It will develop their sense of responsibility and awareness of the needs of others.

Health and Social Education (HSE): focuses on the personal, physical and societal issues. Respect for body and mind helps them make informed decisions regarding their own lives.

Environments (ENV): develops awareness, a sense of responsibility and the need for action for the world we live in for now and in the future.

Human Ingenuity (HI): examines and reflects on how and why we create and what the consequences might be.

Starting September 2014 the MYP will see some considerable changes in which is called the Next Chapter of the MYP. This school year will be used to prepare for these changes through personal development of our staff and the preparation of new curriculum materials.

The Learner Profile

In conclusion, we at QAK look forward to promoting the education of the whole person and developing an international perspective among our students and consider someone else’s point of view that might differ from theirs. The IB Middle Years Coordinator

At QAK Mr. Ate Hemmes, as MYP Coordinator: is responsible for the implementation and delivery of the program. In close collaboration with all the departments a MYP curriculum (written/taught/assessed) has been developed that is challenging and involves critical thinking.

The coordinator works closely together with the Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Nada Al Jabi, the Heads of Department and (Subject) Area Leaders. He also maintains the communication between QAK and the IBO and is responsible for all administrative aspects related.
